Mar. 6--One might think that Jack R. Harrell Jr. would spend his days puttering around Polk County's golf courses, many of which use his products to stay green. Not quite, the president and chief executive officer of Harrell's Fertilizer Inc., said. Not when he's responsible for running a 64-year-old family business.
"We have access to a lot of great golf courses," said Harrell, 48, a Lakeland native and father of two sons. "But I don't have much time to spend on golf."
Such is the demanding nature of life at Harrell's, a Lakeland-based corporation that produces some 60,000 tons of fertilizer every year and ships it throughout the eastern ...
