After being laid off by Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc., as a computer scientist last November, Lawrence Spearman opened the spectator-active company Fresh Activewear. But why? "I always wanted to own my own business and my four boys were at that age where they wanted to buy all those branded active lines," he said. "I went to a trade show and looked around, thinking, 'Why are there are no black companies doing product that addresses the African-American community since the black consumer is such an important part of this market?'"
