Plants not only cleanse pollutants from the air, but they can increase humidity in winter without bringing in humidity-induced bacteria and fungus, said a well-known plant researcher formerly affiliated with NASA. 
Two research papers written by Bill Wolverton, 61, a former senior research scientist at National Aeronautics and Space Administration, show house plants remove formaldehyde, xylene and other chemical pollutants from the air while raising the level of humidity.
