Pacifier use is common throughout the world and may cause more rapid weaning. Barros and colleagues studied breast-fed infants who were also given pacifiers to determine the correlation between pacifier use and the age at which breast feeding stopped.
All rooming-in infants born during a two-month period at a maternity hospital in Brazil were eligible for inclusion in the study. A total of 605 infants were enrolled, and baseline, one-month, four-month and six-month questionnaires were completed by each mother.
