The great kitchen: Sears' new store concept tries high-end strategy with major appliances.(The Great Indoors, Sears, Roebuck and Co.)

Sears, Roebuck and Co.'s new home furnishings store, The Great Outdoors, will offer premium brands to attract high-end clientele. Prominent labels featured include Amana, Kenmore, Maytag and JennAir. To serve the customers the store plans to draw, sales staff receive intensive training in products, customer knowledge, and sales counseling.

Lone Tree, Colo.-The Great Kitchen in The Great Indoors is a great departure for the nation's greatest major-appliance retailer.

"Radical" might be the more appropriate word to describe how the ultimate Middle America chain opened a high-end emporium with premium brands while avoiding any identification with Sears.
