PRODUCTS: Taiwan approves imports of Integra's artifical skin

Taiwan's Ministry of Health granted approval to US company Integra LifeSciences Corp to import and market its Integra artificial skin, after the product was used to treat 12 severely burned soldiers.

The New Jersey-based company was granted a special import licence in December 1996 to ship the artificial skin to a military hospital to treat 12 Taiwanese soldiers who were severly burned in an ammunition explosion. The accident led to a congressional public hearing to evaluate the preparedness of the country's health care system to deal with burn injuries.
