French Firm Completes Purchase of Water Company U.S. Filter.

May 3 -- French conglomerate Vivendi SA wrapped up its acquisition of United States Filter Corp. (NYSE: USF) following the successful purchase of the water company's common stock for $31.50 a share and the European Economic Union's blessing of the marriage.

Vivendi completed its tender offer for common shares of the Palm Desert- based company on April 22. European Economic Union officials approved the deal April 27, and the merger was completed two days later.

"It's been as smooth as you can get," said David Manlowe, managing director of brokerage BT Alex Brown, noting that U.S. Filter shareholders have approved the terms.
