California Firm Runs New Mexico Perlite Mining Operation.

Jun. 5 -- The "perly gate" -- a yellow-painted, typical iron, ranch gate -- hangs open at the entrance to Harborlite Corp.'s perlite mine and mill.

Dubbed the "perly gate" by employees, it stands about 2 miles east of U.S. 285 and marks the entrance to Harborlite's 1,500-acre mining operation in northern New Mexico, 23 miles south of Antonito.

The arid hills give no indication of the mineral wealth beneath their surface. From the highway, the dominate six-story building appears more like a giant gray fortress than a mill that daily turns out tons of size-graded and purity-tested perlite.
