New Balance to buy Dunham.

New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. plans to step into the work boot and hiking boot market by buying the Dunham boot brand from a Pittsburgh company in a deal expected to be signed today.

A source at New Balance would not provide terms of the deal, but said the Boston-based athletic shoe maker plans to buy the Dunham brand from Iron Age Holdings Corp.

Dunham has more than 30 boot models, ranging from waterproof sport boots to heavy-duty leather work boots, all made in Lewiston, Maine. Dunham's 1997 revenues are estimated at $15 million, according to this week's edition of Sporting Goods Intelligence. The industry publication said the deal does not include the Dunham plant ...
