Dear Dr. Cathey: We have been told that now it is the time when you are supposed to fertilize a ficus tree using 20-20-20. I can't locate it.

A: Garden centers, supermarkets, and even large drug stores have fertilizers for houseplants. They all carry 20-20-20, but it goes under many different brand names. Sometimes it's described as all-purpose 10-10-10. It usually has a bit of blue dye in it, a dry crystalline powder. For ficus use a quarter teaspoon to a gallon of water every five or seven days. Water for houseplants is most beneficial when it is lukewarm, about 80 to 90 degrees.
