Horticulture Research Center Seeks Better Varieties for Kansas Vintners.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 16--Back at the beginning of the 20th century, when Kansas was a frontier, grapes were a prominent crop. In the early 1900s, every single one of Kansas' 105 counties had at least one vineyard, and there were more than 400 acres of the raw material of fine wines in Sedgwick County alone.

Then came rapid transportation, Prohibition and the Napa Valley of California. Vineyards in Kansas disappeared.

Now, almost a century later, grapes are making a comeback. In 1994, there were three wineries in Kansas. In 1996, that had doubled to six. And today there are seven. Six of those seven grow grapes and make primarily grape wine. The seventh, Wildwood Cellars of Mulvane, ...
