Minneapolis council unanimously OKs light-rail design; Officials praise the proposed system as a step in the right direction for metro-area transportation.(NEWS)

1/3 The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved the preliminary design of the proposed Hiawatha Avenue light-rail line on Friday, along with a list of design details to work out later.

Council Member Dore Mead called the vote a "momentous occasion," coming 45 years after the trolley system stopped running in Minneapolis.

Council Member Sandra Colvin Roy, whose ward would be among those served by the line, said the decision would cap almost 40 years of struggle and strife over transportation issues along Hiawatha Avenue.
