Q. I have noticed over the past few years that my houseplants don't really do much growing during the winter. They more or less just maintain themselves. Do I need to fertilize this season?
A. All plants have growth cycles that include periods of rest. As trees lose their leaves in fall and enter into a dormant period, so do houseplants. In winter palms, ferns and other evergreen houseplants are less active and produce fewer new leaves than in spring.
Resting plants require less water and warmth than when they are actively growing. Very little fertilizer is needed at this time.
