Q. How much 12-4-8 is needed if the soil test report calls for 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet? How many 50-pound bags should you buy to fertilize a half-acre of turf?

A. The answer can be explained as follows: Take the rate of the element in the fertilizer and divide it by the percent of the element. The result will be in pounds needed.

Using a 12-4-8 fertilizer (at the rate of 1 pound N per 1,000 square feet) 1 pound N divided by 12 percent equals 8.3 pounds of 12-4-8 per 1,000 square feet. The rate for P and K follow respectively.
