Does playing the recorder put children off music?

FOR decades, the distressing sound of Frere Jacques played on massed recorders has been a staple of school music lessons.

But the humble instrument has been accused of perpetrating worse crimes than simply setting parents' and teachers' teeth on edge.

Research indicates that pupils find playing the instrument so dull, childish and 'uncool' that it destroys their interest in all other music.

They claim that they are pressganged into playing the recorder and it puts them off trying anything else such as the violin or cello.
