The kelp bass, Paralabrax clathratus, is a common nearshore reef fish of the Southern California Bight, being abundant on both the mainland and the Channel Islands. Although the biology of kelp bass has been well studied, aspects concerning its mating system and reproductive behavior have received little attention. The purpose of the study is to describe several aspects of the mating system including (1) seasonal sexual dichromatism, (2) spawning behavior, and (3) general mating strategies of breeding adults.
