USDA Scientists Develop Biodegradable Sunscreen.(U.S. Department of Agriculture )(Brief Article)

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) researchers in Peoria, IL, recently unveiled a new biodegradable sunscreen comprised of soybean oil and a "natural chemical" found in oat bran. USDA scientists Joe Laszlo and Dave Compton said the sunscreen, known as "SoyScreen," was created by bonding ferulic acid, which is "structurally similar" to synthetic chemicals used in commercial sunscreens, to soybean oil, producing a waterproof sunscreen formulation that is able to absorb ultraviolet (UV) light.
