Lewis Robinson's first book, "Officer Friendly" (HarperCollins), is a quirky, suspenseful little volume of stories so rich with strange characters and twists and turns of plot that it doesn't feel like a short-story collection at all: it feels like a film festival. In the title story, set, like all the others, in or around the fictional Point Allison, Maine, two high-school buddies are shooting off bottle rockets in a parking lot when a fat policeman accosts them: "I couldn't believe it. He actually yelled 'Freeze!'... We knew all the cops in Point Allison. They were subpar." The guys run. The cop chases them, but his ticker isn't up to the challenge. ...
