THE family of a Royal Marine officer who died in a helicopter crash in the Kuwaiti desert remembered him yesterday as a man who revelled in his job and was proud to lead his troops into battle rather than follow from behind.
"He led a charmed life. Everyone who met him took to him instantly," said the family of Major Jason Ward, 34, believed to have been the most senior British officer to die in the conflict so far.
Major Ward was one of eight British soldiers attached to 3 Commando Brigade, who died when the US CH46 Sea Knight crashed last Friday.
A family statement said: "Jason was the epitome of a Royal Marine. He was respected and revered by all who knew him. ...
