Bellcore, which dreams up new technology for regional telephone
companies, is refusing to do what most companies do when the lights burn
out, as some 3,000 tubes do each month at its offices.

The Livingston-based research and engineering center is among a
handful of companies in the country that recycle expired fluorescent
lights and the potentially harmful mercury within them.
