AGRICULTURE: CONTROL OF MEALY BUG LEADS TO BAN ON PLANT TRADE

GEORGETOWN, Sept. 28 (IPS) -- Guyana and Jamaica have restricted
the importation of fresh fruits, vegetables and plants from
regional neighbors as Caribbean countries prepare to do battle with
the region's latest enemy, the pink mealy bug.
Guyana has banned all plant, vegetable and fruit imports from
other regional countries while Jamaica has decided not to bring in
these products from Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada where there are
confirmed reports of an outbreak of the pest.
The northern Caribbean island says it will also restrict imports
of these products from other countries -- such as Barbados, St.
