CHICAGO - JANUARY 17, 2005 - HighBeam™ Research, Inc., operator of an online research engine for individuals (www.highbeam.com) that fills the gap between free search engines and high-end information services, today announced that it will celebrate its first anniversary by providing free access to its service from Monday, January 24 to Friday, January 28, 2005. The company also announced that is has reached several important milestones during its first year of operation.

Patrick Spain, founder, chairman and CEO of HighBeam Research, said, "We are pleased to celebrate the success of our first year by giving all researchers a present - free access to our service. We are certain visitors to our open house will discover that HighBeam Research is so much more than search. Our service is built for serious research. We pride ourselves on helping researchers find, organize and share information faster and more effectively with the research tools and premium content we provide on our HighBeam Research Engine."
HighBeam Research First Year Milestones Formerly known as Alacritude, HighBeam Research launched on January 26, 2004. The company improved its existing eLibrary archive by doubling the list of publications, adding more than 18 million documents and integrating eLibrary with two of the company¿s other services -- Researchville and part of encyclopedia.com. The result is the HighBeam Research Engine, a new service designed for individuals engaged in serious business, educational and personal research. During its first year of operation, the company reported that it:
- Added 1.5 million Basic Members (registered users).
- Improved the functionality of the service. Enhancements include the ability to search by publication and include or exclude any individual publication or groups of publications; tools to set up e-mail alerts to include or exclude publications and the ability to save research findings in personalized folders for later viewing.
- Added HighBeam™ Web (includes the ability to create customized meta-searches of the open Web and create personalized research groups).
- Launched HighBeam™ Executives (23 million profiles of professionals and executives nationwide).
- Added HighBeam™ Reference (25 encyclopedias, dictionaries and thesauruses).
- Added advertising revenue to strengthen its business model.
- Launched a beta version of blogging tools and a blog demonstration site, www.chiefbloggingofficer.com.
- Was named an InfoCommerce "Model of Excellence" and was named to the eContent 100 for the second consecutive year.
Spain added, "I am proud that we have been one of the early successes in a new market category - a research service for individuals. When we founded this company, it was a lone voice. Now, other services are recognizing this market. Search engines have begun to include some premium documents in their indexes and the large enterprise-focused information services are moving downstream with new, limited versions of their products. Additionally, there have been new, niche research services that launched to address this market. It's an exciting time."
