Jan. 17--CALABASAS, Calif. -- Countrywide Home Loans Inc. on Friday increased its minority and low-income borrower lending goal to $1 trillion over the next five years.

It's a $400 billion extension of the Calabasas company's "We House America" initiative established in 1992. At that time, the goal was $1.25 billion in loans to minorities and low-income borrowers over the next several years.

The focus proved successful, and in 2001 the company set the bar at $600 billion in these kinds of loans by 2010.

However, by the end of last year the company had reached the $300 billion mark and decided to aim higher, said Mary Duron, senior vice president of fair lending and the "We House America" program at Countrywide. …
