A Tennessee paving contractor adapts asphalt paving techniques and equipment to place roller compacted concrete on a project in northeast Georgia.

Near the northeast Georgia community of Maysville, construction is moving ahead on an unusual paving project -- placement of a 7-inch lift of roller compacted concrete (RCC) to construct the main access road for a new industrial development located between Maysville and nearby Interstate 85. The project calls for placement of 3,400 feet of main access road, plus an additional 300-foot side road -- all of RCC. The roadway, with a total width of 28 feet, is being paved in two passes, one lane at a time.

The mix typically consists of a stiff mix concrete with a finer gradation than conventional concrete mixes. The mix design for this project included a blend of #7 and #89 coarse aggregate, manufactured sand, cement and slag (30-percent replacement) with a water-cement ratio of 0.38.
