VIRGINIA NEEDS a new statute to defend its religious liberties. The old statute was written by Thomas Jefferson and enacted by our legislature in 1786 to address the concerns of the day. It promoted the participation of all religious people in public life by rejecting a permanent place of privilege for the Anglican Church and those affiliated with it or any other religious organization.
That statute addressed the concerns over religious establishments, but it never meant to destroy or diminish the pervasive influence of religion within the public lives of the people, as we find today in the fundamental philosophy and rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court. …
