Warren Stenberg, 74, `U' professor and chess expert.(NEWS)
Warren Stenberg, 74, a retired University of Minnesota mathematics professor and chess expert, died Friday of a heart attack at the University of Minnesota Hospital.
Stenberg was born in Oakland, Calif., and received his bachelor's degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1955.
After graduating he became a math instructor at the University of Minnesota, where he eventually became a professor. During his tenure he co-wrote four computer science books, a calculus text and a high school mathematics book.
Stenberg played chess all his life, but did not compete in many tournaments. "If you gave him enough time he could beat God," said his friend Roger Rudolph, of Wyoming, Minn. …
