NEW YORK -- In a move that stunned the publishing world, Conde Nast gave Bonnie Fuller, the editor in chief of Glamour, her walking papers Wednesday.
The move follows a turbulent time at the magazine, which has suffered major advertising and newsstand declines over the last year. Fuller, 44, was replaced by Cynthia Leive, the 34-year-old editor in chief of Self, who was a close aide to Fuller's predecessor, Ruth Whitney.
Conde Nast declined comment on Fuller's departure and would only say that she will leave the company when her contract expires in mid-August. Fuller didn't return phone calls seeking comment.
Fuller took over the reins in August, 1998, from Whitney, who had served as Glamour's editor in chief for 31 years. Whitney died in June, 1999. Fuller brought to Conde Nast a strong track record of boosting newsstand sales in her previous roles as editor in chief of Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and YM. …
